Support Sustainable Food at UNC
Fair- FLO Food supports fair food for all individuals involved in production and consumption. Local- FLO Food supports food purchases that prioritize the welfare of local economies. Prioritizing local economies entails consideration of all aspects of the food chain including production, processing, distribution, and consumption. Organic- FLO Food supports sustainable agricultural practices that are environmentally conscious. Environmentally conscious practices seek to promote biodiversity, maintain the integrity and coexistence of ecosystems and farming communities, and overall minimize the impact of agriculture on the natural environment. The UNC administration has committed our university to being a leading institution in sustainability. The important issues of food and dining however have not been sufficiently addressed within UNC’s sustainability initiatives. We, the undersigned, support FLO Food at UNC in its efforts to promote sustainable food in UNC’s dining halls. We specifically advocate two methods of promoting sustainable food at UNC, as endorsed by FLO Food: 1:Recognizing and reporting where our food comes from and how it is produced 2:Creating an institutionalized method for judging the sustainability of our food. We believe these steps are necessary to ensure improvements in the University’s food sustainability and support their implementation as soon as possible. We, the undersigned, support FLO Food at UNC in its efforts to promote sustainable food in UNC’s dining halls.
