In signing this petition, you are helping to promote the Local Food Security Act, which entails the following:
Establish provincial targets to increase the percentage of fresh and processed food produced and consumed in New Brunswick;
Require public institutions such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes to increase the percentage of food on their menus that is produced and processed in New Brunswick with local ingredients; and,
Establish a labeling system to clearly identify food and beverages produced in New Brunswick". (Green Party of Canada, 2015).
In addition, the passing of this act will bring jobs to New Brunswick:
Studies show that by converting only $10 per week from each household currently being spent on imported foods, to New Brunswick-grown foods, the province could see over $30-million in increased revenues. A move towards local food procurement through the adoption of the Local Food Security Act is the first step in making this a reality.

We are currently synthesizing the data from this petition to present as formal testimony for the policy review sessions. I have requested a formal meeting with the office of the MLA to discuss the inclusion of institutional procurement targets in the next legislative draft.

The scale of this response is sufficient to move the conversation forward with the relevant legislative offices. We are now preparing a formal briefing document to present the data collected through this campaign. Expect a summary of the next meeting with MLA David Coon once it is confirmed.

Organic locally grown food is essential to the health of New Brunswickers. The people need to know where their food comes from, and they need to have a solid alternative to the GMO friendly companies shipping non-nutritious food to them.
Local food is a very important issue for New Brunswick local economy as well as having healthier citizens in the future.
