Like many Massachusetts communities, Weston has a systemic and growing gas leak problem due to an aging gas infrastructure. At the end of 2017, National Grid identified over 140 unrepaired gas leaks in Weston - some of which are over 20 years old.

Not only does this situation raise safety issues, especially as Weston's pipelines operate at higher pressure than other towns, gas leaks affect our health, our environment and our planet:

  • Breathing gas fumes exacerbates respiratory illnesses
  • Methane is a potent greenhouse gas impacting climate change
  • Gas leaks suffocate the roots of trees and plants

Gas utilities are not incentivized to fix non-emergency leaks, as they pass on the cost of lost and unaccounted for gas to consumers, and they receive a higher return from investing in new pipelines than from maintaining existing infrastructure.

We can no longer sit back and entrust the health and safety of our community to National Grid.

Sign this petition to support an independent audit of Weston's gas infrastructure - to accurately identify and measure ALL gas leaks. This audit will provide the Town with the information needed to plan and drive a strategy for fixing the largest and most harmful leaks in Weston.

Updates

December 3, 2018

I am currently gathering technical reports on our local pipeline pressure to prepare for our presentation to the town council. Send a quick email to your representatives demanding they support an independent audit of this infrastructure. Your pressure on them is the only way we force a change.

We hit our stride today and the momentum behind this audit is undeniable. Post the link on Facebook right now so we can keep the pressure on National Grid. Text three friends and tell them to sign before the next town council meeting.

Thank you, SWAG, for organizing this. A question: does anyone know how quickly new leaks appear? In other words, if all 140 leaks were fixed, would we continuously need to address new locations with new leaks? Or is the solution new piping everywhere? Just wondering....
