Fireflies Conservation

A firefly is a soft-bodied beetle with the ability to produce light within the organism per se. There are around two thousand species of fireflies that exist in the world but in Malaysia, due to the lack of documentation and research, the actual number of species of fireflies in Malaysia is unknown. With the urban development and deforestation that have happened in this globalisation world, the fireflies populations are gradually declining across the world due to loss of habitat. Therefore, there is a need to conserve fireflies as well as to conserve its habitats. This is due to the reason that fireflies are good bio-indicators to ascertain the health of the wetlands due to its sensitivity to a changing environment.
