FACT SHEET

Hawthorne Glen: Low-Income Housing Development

DHIC, Inc.

Nonprofit affordable housing development organization. Address: 113 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh 27601. Phone number: 919-832-4345. Website: www.dhic.org. Contact: Gregg Warren, Exec. Dir., or Natalie Britt, VP of Rental Development

DHIC, Inc.

Propose to build 72 multi-family rental units for Low-Income tenants located off Rock Quarry Rd. (Located on left side of Rock Quarry Rd. across from Pearl Ridge Street entrance and connect to the Barnwell Elementary School and Park area. (OR) On the left side of the road, traveling south on Rock Quarry Rd, pass the intersection of Barnwell Road.)

Requested $800,000 from Wake County

Requested $1.1 million from the City of Raleigh

Reasons why this development should not be supported

Increase in traffic without sufficient widening of roads on Rock Quarry.

Increase in the number of low-income students within a school area that is struggling to meet performance standards (i.e., Barnwell Elementary and Walnut Creek Elementary Schools). This is a form of housing and school segregation.

Increase in crime for this ETJ area of Raleigh (see attached information).

DHIC has not reached out to the community to gain input about this development or to seek feedback from the neighboring subdivisions.

There is an over-abundant supply of affordable housing in the existing area which appear to be concentrated and deliberate.

With the number of crime incidents and low performing schools located in this area, homes are reselling at a much slower rate compared to other housing markets across Wake County.

The ratio of renters-to-homeowners is being skewed. When homes are foreclosed or renter-occupied, there is less of a vested interest in the upkeep and safety of the overall community.

This development will not be funded unless both Wake County and the City of Raleigh agrees to support it. Please contact the following individuals to express your concern:
