I am honestly stunned to share that the university has agreed to our request for a fair pay rise. This outcome belongs entirely to the staff who refused to be overlooked. Thank you for showing that when we keep the focus on what is right the results can actually change.

Final supporters
Whilst we the undersigned acknowledge the contribution of Mr Bean, Vice Chancellor at the Open University, towards the current success of the University in mitigating the effects of the changes in the University funding policy, recognition is also due to the contributions and dedication shown by the Academic and Support Staff of the Open University.
We call upon Mr Bean, Vice Chancellor, at The Open University, together with the Council and Senate of the Open University to recognise that without the hard work of the Academic and Support Staff of the Open University, none of these mitigations would have been achievable.
We therefore petition Mr Bean, Vice Chancellor, at The Open University together with the Council and Senate of The Open University to acknowledge the contributions made by all its staff across the board by sanctioning an above inflation pay rise.
The University is in a far stronger financial position now, since the changes to the funding policy were put in place, which has been indicated by the 11% pay rise, awarded to Mr Bean, Vice-Chancellor, at The Open University, as reported by the Daily Telegraph.
Therefore, UNISON are asking the Open University to acknowledge the contributions made by all its staff in a fair and equal way by agreeing to an above inflation pay rise for all its members of staff.

Everyone, but especially the people near the bottom of the pay scale who do a lot of the work that makes the university function are hurting, it's time to reward them for keeping the university going.
I presume that the VC's pay rise will be justified in the same manner that the banks seek to justify the remuneration of their top 'assets'. Good staff will not come into (nor stay in) academia if the rewards are neither fair nor sufficient.
Contribution of part-time staff should be rewarded pro-rats with full-time. Unfortunately, this is becoming rare in universities generally. Given its origins and charter, OU should be leading the way with regard to fairness.
My family are really struggling, and we have gone into debt for the first time in 13 years. it is a kick in the face to see a colleague getting an 11% pay rise. This sends a clear message to the Open University community that OU staff are not appreciated. Three little words: Bleeding. Us. Dry.
OU employees are regularly told by the Executive that we're doing a great job, and our successes are published broadly; wouldn’t the praise carry more clout if our salaries were a fair reflection of the value we’re so often told that we add.

If an 11% pay rise was necessary to acknowledge the Vice Chancellor's accomplishments, a pay rise of more than 1% must surely be necessary to acknowledge the accomplishments of everyone else in this hardworking but extremely demoralised organisation.
