The University Management have refused to negotiate with the UCU and have left our staff with no option but to strike. As a result, students are missing out on significant amounts of education which we have paid a lot for. These classes affect essays, dissertations and other assignments meaning we will suffer because of the stance the Vice Chancellor has taken. In a public meeting, the Vice Chancellor was asked about his pension and how the changes would affect him, and he replied by stating that he is unaffected by the changes because he has already paid in the maximum amount of money and is no longer in the scheme. It is shocking that the management at the University of Sussex can treat their staff this way, and risk their pensions like this. The management are using students as pawns on the negotiating table.
By signing this petition, you are showing support for the University staff, who are losing large amounts of their wage to strike, and putting further pressure on the Vice Chancellor to return to either further negotiate with the Union, or compensate the students who are losing out on education and money by demanding refunds for the class time missed.
It is time we questioned the Vice Chancellor on why he thinks this is acceptable. How would he feel if his pension was at risk.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. My dissertation deadline is coming up and I have no guidance. Fix it.
I am paying nine grand a year for this. If they wont give us our lectures they need to give us our money back simple as.
Even as a PhD student, my supervisors will have to go for the strike and cannot give me prompt responses and feedback.
Totally unfair on the staff have been left with no choice. The uni management need to stop acting like a greedy corporation and start listening.
This callous response from the University itself only shows that 1. it doesn't care about its staff who they owe its success to, and 2. it doesn't care about the students who can also help it succeed through performing well and who are putting themselves into a lifetime's worth of debt to be there. Universities whine about being seen as businesses after the fee increase but in this response to the strike haven't shown any sign of listening and empathising with the parties who are being actually being hurt by their actions. Sussex University prides itself on standing out from the crowd in its egalitarian image, but this makes it seem like it's nothing more than another big business ruled by an untouchable CEO who don't care as long as their bottom line and profit margin remains unbroken.

The VC is totally out of touch with reality. How can he justify his massive salary while lecturers are struggling and we arent getting taught?
