The government has officially announced that public transport concessions will extend to all postgraduate and international students in Victoria. This policy shift reflects the persistence of the 1,083 individuals who signed this petition. We will monitor the implementation phase to ensure these benefits reach every eligible student as promised.
Petition for Public Transport Concessions for Postgraduate and International Students
To the Parliament of Victoria, the Victorian Government and relevant Ministers,
We, the undersigned, call on the Victorian Parliament to enact legislation and/or make provision for the realisation of:
-- Public transport concessions for all postgraduate University students; and
-- Public transport concessions for all international University students.
In 2008, the House of Representatives’ Committee on Science, Industry and Innovation’s inquiry into research training and issues in Australian Universities recommended that:
“The Australian Government work with the State Governments to support postgraduate students through the reduction of certain living expenses, in particular, through the provision of concessions for public transport travel. Access to transport concessions should be made available to all full-time tertiary students, regardless of type of enrolment or the level of course in which they are enrolled.”
We endorse the Committee’s recommendation and insist that all Victorian University students should have access to travel concessions. This is based on the recognition that all students should have equal rights and opportunities and that all students, particularly in the current global financial climate, face increasing financial burdens.
Living in melbourne is expensive enough. international students contribute so much to this city, the least we can do is give them a cheaper way to get to campus.

Totally agree. Why are postgrads treated like we have full time salaries? We're living off scholarships at best.
