Did you know that "in California, pollution related to the ports and goods movement causes 2400 premature deaths annually and cancer risk rates up to 20 times higher than federal clean air standards" (Physicians for Social Responsibility, LA) Ports, oil refineries, and highway traffic are polluting our air and this pollution is disproportionately affecting poor communities of color. The air is not fair. Your signature on this petition signifies your support for our campaign as well as fair air in Los Angeles County. This is one way to challenge political representatives to acknowledge air inequality and fight for better enforcement of existing laws. Updates

July 30, 2009

I have spent this week reading through your personal stories about the air quality in our neighborhoods. Knowing that so many of you wake up struggling to breathe because of the refineries nearby is exactly why I started this. We are currently compiling these accounts to show the city council that this is a crisis they can no longer ignore.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of how many families in my neighborhood are tired of struggling to breathe. This surge in support proves that we are no longer ignoring the reality of the toxic air surrounding our homes.

Living near the port is constant stress for my kids. The smell alone is bad enough but knowing what it does to our lungs is terrifying. We deserve better than this.

GET IT DONE. My neighborhood is covered in thick black soot every single morning. It is absolutely unacceptable that we are being treated like second class citizens.
