The explanation from ETSU for the current Buccaneer mascot is a made up story. A quick google search will tell you that there is no record of a pirate by the name of Jean Paul LeBucque. Also it is pretty convenient for a Buccaneer to have the name LeBucque (LeBuc). There is also no record of Pirate Creek or any underground rivers in the tri-cities area.
Regardless of the story the mascot makes no sense and is embarrassing for a completely land-locked mountainous region 400 miles from the coast.

The pushback against this idea has been exhausting but I am still reading every single message you send. It is clear that a lot of people feel the same frustration about our mascot being such a hollow invention. I am currently preparing to formally present these concerns to the administration.

Reaching this point has been a long road and the weight of it is starting to show. Seeing this kind of momentum makes the exhaustion worth it because it means people finally see the disconnect in our branding.

im sick of explaining the fake story to my friends from out of state. its just embarrassing
Bucs is already what everyone says anyway so just make it official. Tired of the pirate thing it looks so cheap.
The Mascot should be based on something more tangible.
