The Assistant Education Professor Position in the UVic School of Music is hiring based on a preferential system. While we understand that this system has been put in place to aid in the diversification of the UVic faculty and we fully support this cause, its implementation is taking away an equal opportunity from a highly qualified and widely admired professor. This system is designed so that anyone who is aboriginal, has a physical disability, is a visible minority, or is a woman will be short-listed before any other qualified candidates. This means all qualified candidates not belonging to one of these groups will not be given a fair opportunity to audition. This petition aims to demonstrate to the University of Victoria that their student body supports the full and equal consideration of an exemplary candidate.

Capaldo is seriously the best prof in the music department. Losing him would be such a huge mistake for the program.

Diversity is good but this is just unfair. Everyone deserves a fair shot at the job regardless of those checkboxes.

Dr. Capaldo is one of the most qualified, hardworking, and genuine professors I've met during my time at UVic and I would hate to see him leave after all he's done for us as students and as a department.

I fully support the priortization of female, indigenous, and disabled candidates, but excluding other candidates is not fair. Make room for everyone. Equal opportunity is about inclusion, not exclusion.

I agree that it's high time for some more strong female role models in music Ed faculty at UVic, but Dr Capaldo seems to be so wonderful at building community and making people feel good about themselves while still having high expectations and a very high level of expertise in music ed, and regardless of who the applicants are, these are qualities this program sorely needs right now.

Best prof I have ever had, it would be a complete shame to see him leave!
