The Lafayette Parade Association finally listened and officially banned these bamboo arrows from all future parades. I am so relieved that no one else will have to visit the emergency room because of these dangerous projectiles. Thank you for helping me push for this safety change.

Final supporters
Yesterday was a perfect Fat Tuesday in Lafayette, weather on point, good friends nearby, and plenty of floats throwing all sorts of fun things to the kids.
A good time was had until the very last float of the very last parade, one of these bamboo arrows was happily thrown into the crowd (the guy def did not mean any ill intent) and the flat end hit me directly in the forehead, gashing my head and ruining the crowd around me’s fun bc blood gushed everywhere. I hurried to the ER across the street and had to get 4 stitches.
3 years ago, the arrow’s plastic point hit a friend ( standing where we were yesterday) directly in the temple and caused extreme bleeding, she had to be escorted to the ER by ambulance.
I’m typing all of this to try to get these arrows banned from being throw at Lafayette parades.
I was told over and over again by the ER drs how much worse it would’ve been had it hit my eye just two inches down.
I’m terrified this hits a child in the future and does way more damage then it did to an adult.
My friend who got injured years ago, tried to get cooperation from the Lafayette Parade Association and it went no where.
Typing all of this in hopes this gets to the right person and get these banned as parade throws! We would never allow someone standing above us to throw bamboo rods at our heads, how is this still allowed?!

The parade association remains silent even after I sent them my medical records and the story of my friend. I spend my evenings searching for a direct contact who will actually listen instead of just looking the other way. We cannot let them wait for a child to get hurt before they change the rules.

Seeing this much energy behind the petition feels like a turning point for our community. My forehead is finally starting to heal, but knowing that so many of you are demanding safer parades keeps me focused on getting these bamboo hazards banned for good.

Make it end. There’s no reason why parade goers should be leaving a parade to get stitches!
Please banned them before this becomes a tragedy that we can’t clean up with a few stitches.
I’ve personally witnessed several people get gashed in the face with these spears. It’s not safe to throw at people.
We need to ban these arrows as throws in the parades as they are very dangerous! Thankfully my friends eyesight was not affected however, it very easily could have been!

I think there should be restrictions on the types of throws. Only individual beads should be allowed be thrown not whole bags and individual moonpies and Little Debbie cakes and not whole boxes. Soft and small items nothing dangerous. Also drinking and being intoxicated when riding a float should be banned because people do stupid and harmful things when they are drinking that they probably wouldn't do if they were sober.

From one mother to another. My little one enjoys Mardi Gras, but when danger is brought up, the fun stops here for me.
