As Lawyers we are called to serve with our knowledge in the temple of justice. Each lawyer endeavours to apply legal knowledge to solve corporate or individualized problems or advance the interests of their clients. Now show me a world without lawyers and I will show you a world full of problems with no one to solve it.

Our roles as lawyers varies but one thing rings true for us all, we are ministers in the temple of justice and this by its very nature brings us to encounter the common man, law enforcement officers and custodian of the law.

Our noble profession by its very nature commands, prestige, respect and places us in a position of strength as defenders of the rights of others notwithstanding the circumstances. We are not called learned for nothing! We as lawyers are in a unique position to help others but what happens when that strength is taken away from us through police brutality, acts of intimidation and harassment?

The stories of Miss Chiamaka Nwangwu Esq and another male lawyer are just two out of many on the brutality meted out on lawyers in the practice of their profession or in the course of their daily lives. But these stories are unique because it speaks to our souls and has awakened us to the battle we must fight albeit with our pens. I spoke to Chiamaka Nwangwu Esq, because I could feel her pain and hear her cry for justice. She was assaulted in 3-3 Police station division in Anambra State by the DPO and other police officers. These acts must be nipped in the bud else it grows into the norm. An assault on Miss Nwangwu ,Mazi Osigwe and all the other lawyers out there is an assault on our noble profession. It is time to speak up and it is time to cry out for justice.

Let us use the tools of our trade to register our disgust and protest to this new threat to us. It is time, dear colleagues to end this oppression and brutality by the police and other law enforcement agencies. The culprits must be brought to the book.

This is the 21st century and some things such as police brutality, assault and harrassment of lawyers are simply unacceptable.

Join me in signing this petition. Together we can make the difference. Together we can end police brutality on us.
