Rock Quarry Tennis Courts, 500 Stadium Drive, has long been the center stage of great public courts tennis in Durham, NC. This beautifully landscaped public tennis facility with it relaxing environment is in need of your help! The 8 hard-surface tennis courts must be resurfaced due to aging and active tennis play over the years. These tennis courts have been used for many years to promote local and United States Tennis Association (USTA) sanctioned tennis events within the community. They are now in poor condition and need to be properly maintained for continued tennis play. The wear and tear on the courts make some of the courts unsafe and unusable. Tennis is a sport for a lifetime! Please support resurfacing the Rock Quarry Tennis Courts by November 2008. Also, with increased tennis play in the community through leagues, individual and group play, please support upgrading the lighting system at Elmira Tennis Courts and the currently resurfaced Garrett Park Tennis Courts with its wonderful blue courts. Both public courts are used consistently by the community. The current lighting is insufficient to meet on-court vision for proper play on several courts. This can be resolved temporarily through increased lighting added to the current locations until future funding is available to replace the full lighting systems. In addition,a tennis improvement plan must be established that includes resurfacing all remaining public tennis courts that are used on an ongoing basis for leagues, clinics, social and competitive play such as Elmira, Southern Boundaries, Whipporwill, and East End after Rock Quarry has been completed. This plan should include resurfacing these courts in 2008-09; with ongoing maintenance and resurfacing of all public court facilities every 5-10 years after their initial surfacing is completed; and new lighting for all heavily used tennis facilities within the next 5 years. This petition will be forwarded to the Durham City Council, USTA and its affiliates, local businesses/organizations with the Durham community to support efforts for resurfacing, upgrading the lighting systems, and maintaining our wonderful public court facilities; and to assure tennis continues to be encouraged and promoted within our community.
