The York Street stop on the F train has only one exit. This is the only subway station in Dumbo and serves as the gateway to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Aside from the inevitable congestion this causes at rush hour, the layout is dangerous. Though the F line is particularly deep at York Street, there is no elevator or escalator. Instead, there is one stair at the extreme north end of the subway platform, which winds its way up to just one opening at sidewalk level. On the platform, obstructions block the view of the egress stair, so it’s frustratingly easy to head the wrong way when exiting a train, stranding yourself at the dead end of the platform. But what feels annoying on an ordinary day becomes life threatening in an emergency. In case of fire or a bomb scare, the station is a corked bottle. What is urgently needed is a second means of egress, barrier free, at the south end of the platform. Sherman Architects has already designed the solution (see it here: https://shermanarchitects.com/portfolio/york-street-subway-station/). Now we, the undersigned, urge the MTA to build it.

I am truly stunned by the way this has taken off and seeing so many people agree on this issue is completely humbling. This momentum belongs entirely to you because I never thought we would get this kind of attention. It is clear that we all want the same basic safety improvements for our station.

Trying to get through that long hallway at rush hour feels like running a gauntlet. I couldn't imagine what it would be like in an emergency situation. A secondary entrance/exit isn't just smart, it's VITAL,.
This is desperately needed. This subway poses not only a danger in an emergency, but for muggings etc by having such a long and desolate dead end! There isn't even a clear view of the exit from the far end of the platform!
I have been a homeowner in DUMBO for over 12 years . This would be an amazing improvement , for our safety and the greater overcrowding of the station especially with the influx of new residents and tech workers in the neighborhood .
A second entrance/exit is critical for the dangerously overcrowded F train stop at York St. It is only a Matter of time before someone is inadvertently pushed onto the tracks due to the narrow platform and the hordes of people who are now living and/or working in DUMBO!!!!

During special events, of which there are more and more, it gets backed up to a dangerous level, leaving no space on the platform with trains coming and going.

I have a disability that keeps me from walking far and I frequently go to this station because of work. Currently it is anxiety inducing considering the large number of people that get spit out onto a narrow sidewalk and congested vehicle area. I support this proposal!
