Festivals on the square are a vital part of Spencer's economy, culture, and development. We should not throw away all the effort that has gone into revitalizing Downtown Spencer.

Myself and my husband came from Texas to enjoy the Spencer Pride Festival with our good friend who lives in Bloomington. If the LGBT festival is cancelled, we shall boycott Spencer, never to return.

I may not be from you town, but friend of mine is, so I would like to share with you a cautionary tale. When I was in high school the school banned all student organizations and all student organization sponsored events just so they could ban our LBGT student group and an LBGT suicide awareness event we were organizing. This in turn meant a scheduled event the student prayer group had planned was also cancelled as well as multiple annual events for the schools honor societies. We, as disparate groups that were very often at direct odds, came together to threaten to sue the school district if they didn't intervene. So, if you don't want the very people your're trying to protect to rise against you and make a spectacle of this, I recommend reconsidering your policy.

The Town of Spencer has seen an incredible renaissance in the past 5+ years I’ve been living here. Disallowing events to be held on the courthouse square will only keep people from realizing the wonderful progress we’ve made, and what Spencer really has to offer. You’re denying downtown business owners exposure too. Tax payers want events downtown. Period.

This was one of the suggestions proposed when the floor was open to the public regarding the county special event ordinance at the special county commissioners meeting held on the 19th of August 2019. I feel safe to say most in attendance were in agreement that this action would be highly benifitial to the county commission and the general public in drafting an appropriate update to the ordinance.

Our courthouse and courthouse lawn represent the governance of our county. When citizens gather there we put our personal, political, and religious values aside to capture moments of harmony focusing on things we have in common. At these moments we are united and the US can use more of that!
