Our petition is an important part of the 2011 campaign for the Whizz Kidz Ambassador Club in Canterbury.

This year, we are aiming to break down some of the barriers between the general public and disabled people. These barriers are the ones that can lead to people staring at, or making comments about disabled people in public places, thinking that the disabled person is not aware enough to notice this.

This is not the case with the majority of disabled people and can cause them to feel like a 'freak' , uncomfortable in public places, and in some cases it can also make the more vulnerable reclusive and scared to leave the house. We feel that the majority of people stare because they are uneducated or unsure about our capabilities and conditions, so this petition, along with the rest of our campaign to raise awareness about the conditions that affect disabled people and deconstruct the fears and misconceptions about disabled people, and that we don't mind questions or people being inquistive as it educates them and helps to change public perception of disabled people.

We encourage you, if you or someone you know has been affected by this, or you just feel strongly about this issue, to sign this petition. It only takes a minute or so, and will change and improve the lives of many disabled people.

Thank you in anticipation of your co-operation,

Whizz Kids Ambassadors Canterbury

Updates

April 17, 2011

The public remains completely oblivious to the isolation their staring causes. I am spending my time exposing these ignorant attitudes directly to the people in power who refuse to acknowledge that disabled individuals are human beings. Keep pushing because these barriers only fall when we refuse to stay quiet.

April 17, 2011

The public is finally starting to pay attention to this blatant disrespect. We are going to keep pushing until people stop treating us like spectacles and start treating us like human beings.

People need to learn some manners. Just because someone has a disability doesnt mean they aren't listening or watching you stare at them. It makes me so mad when I see people acting like that.

My son gets looked at all the time and it is so rude. He hears every word and sees every look. Wish people would just say hello instead of acting like he isn't even a person.

Common sense really. stop staring at people simple as that.
