Should blind and deaf children be able to learn at school?
Cambridgeshire County Council has proposed a drastic reorganisation of the County Sensory Service. For children with sight and hearing loss, these plans are likely to result in a disastrous loss of essential specialist support and expertise.
We call on Cambridgeshire County Council to:
- Keep the Sensory Service county-wide, so that specialist support for blind and partially sighted children, and hearing impaired and deaf children, can be retained and targeted;
- give families proper time to read and understand these worrying proposals before closing the consultation.
- properly resource the Sensory Service, so that Braille users are given the support recommended by the National Quality Standards, andthe IT contract includes the provision of follow up support.

What you are planning is utterly outrages. What about the 'invest to save initiative'? These children will become tax payers in the end, but it's your choice to limit their potential after investing in early diagnosis to prevent the issues that you are now going to create.
I am a deaf adult with 2 deaf children. I know what support is required by deaf people having received excellent support myself. The quality of support received by my children is already at the bare minimum. Any reduction would be disastrous.
These children need all the support they can get to enable them to achieve their full potential! Teachers need this specialist support to enable them to teach the children appropriately. Parents need and deserve appropriate support too!
I want to be part of a society that is committed to giving ALL children an education and does not expect those children with disabilities to rely on charity to get access to education and to be able to move around safely. This is a core Council service on which my seven year old relies.
Sixty years ago I got my first hearing aid and specialist teaching, in Middlesex. It gave me the chance to become a teacher and pay taxes. All children deserve to have the chance to play their part in society, but some just need a little extra hep. Don't deny them this.

My son receives brilliant support from Lynne Donnelly & if this was to be suspended this would have a severe & negative impact regarding his education.Cambs Sensory service plays a vital role for all children with sensory needs & their families.
