I want to bring cute and unique Piaggio Ape Calessino's to Ipswich Waterfront as a Tourist attraction. These are quirky Italian 3 wheelers that carry 2 passengers and a driver. If you have ever been to the Italian Riveria you will have seen them buzzing around.

Ipswich Waterfront is going through a regeneration phase, and the Calessino's would add to the attraction of this area. I have a number of local businesses who are prepared to sponsor this, and therefore the rides would be free.

The problem is that I am unable to run these along the Waterfront because I do not meet the licensing regulations imposed by Ipswich Council. I have been told that I need to apply for either a Hackney Carriage or Private Hire Licence, which I am prepared to do, but I have been told that I would be turned down because the vehicle does not meet the vehicle requirements for granting these licences.

I will be applying for a licence, knowing that I will probably be turned down, but with enough people backing a petition, I might sway the licensing committee to give my application serious consideration.

It makes no sense that I am unable to provide free rides along Ipswich Waterfront, but I can run Brides and Grooms around town, and charge them, without any licence.

It's bonkers - your support might just sway the decision.

I AM WORKING BEHIND THE SCENES TO GET OUR QUIRKY ITALIAN RIDERS APPROVED BY THE COUNCIL!! THE FEEDBACK I AM GETTING FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE AND THEY SEE THE POTENTIAL FOR OUR WATERFRONT !!

A precedent for this has already been set as there have been private hire/taxi licences for this type of vehicle granted by Brighton, Lyme Regis ( see Tukxi on u-tube ) and Portsmouth councils. But be careful what you wish for as the Taxi company that applied for the licence in Portsmouth found the insurance costs too prohibitive to take up the option.

I think the Calessinos are a great idea for the Waterfront and will prove to be an unusual and appealing tourist attraction. My kids loved the idea too!

I absolutely believe that these will enhance the area. I don't think for a second that people use paid taxis to get from one end of the waterfront but I think these would be used because they're aesthetically pleasing and novel.

these a not being used as fare paying cabs so in my opinion should be exempted from cab regulations the water front is in dire need of attracting visitors this can only help achieve this

This is exactly what this town needs. It will keep people dry when it raining and the wind blowing the way it does on the waterfront in the autumn & winter.

Take a look at the Tukxi website, Dennis Spacey who operates his Callessino in Lyme Regis may be able to offer some advice.
