On June 14th, the Superior Council of New France will look at Marie-Joseph Angélique's appeal, and decide if she will be executed for "Burning down the streets of Montréal". There is not enough evidence to prove that she committed the crime, as all the evidence is eyewitness accounts. This is not right at all, and Marie-Joseph Angélique should be let free!

The silence from the council chambers is heavy and feels deliberate. I am spending every waking hour scouring the records for any detail that might sway their minds before they make a decision that cannot be undone.

The scale of this support has truly caught me off guard. It is exhausting to fight against such weight but seeing this many people refuse to look away gives me the strength to stay in this fight.

There is also not enough proof to prove she did commit the crime. Clickbaiters can go back to the Thirteen Colonies of America.

Do you support slavery? Well, let me tell you a story regarding someone that didn't. This is the story of Marie-Joseph, the beautiful slave, wrongly accused. Marie-Joseph was born in Madeira, Portugal in 1705. She was a writer. At just 15, she was taken from her home, sold and brought to new-France, to be a slave. She was traded twice in New France and bought by François Poulin de Francheville. He brought her to Montreal where she would work for him and his wife. Not long later it is believed that Angelique was forced to have her children with another slave. A boy born in 1731 who lived only one month and twins in 1732, who both died within five months. The father noted in the documents was Jacques César, a black labourer from Madagascar who belonged to a colleague of Francois. When Francois died in 1733, his widow, Therese de Couagne, bought her and changed her name from Marie-Joseph to Angelique, after her deceased daughter. In December 1733, when Angélique requested her mistress for freedom, the request was denied. Angelique was so mad that She argued with her owner, threatened her with death by “roasting,” quarrelled with the other servants in the house, threatened them too, with “burning,” and made life so unbearable for another servant, Marie-Louise Poirier, that she quit her job. In January of 1734, Angelique met her love an indentured White labourer from France named Claude Thibault. In 1734, Angelique was sold to a lady for 600 pounds of gunpowder. Angelique managed to escape, she was then caught and brought back to the widow. Later that year, Angelique and Claude prepared their escape. In March of 1734, Angelique ran away with Claude, the day they ran away just happened to be Saturday the 10th of April 1734. The day of the Montreal fire. They put out the fire and the next day, on the 11th, they caught and blamed Angelique. She was arrested by the police. She was taken to court the following morning, where she was charged with arson, a capital crime puni
