Dear DeLaveaga Parents, Staff and Community,
As many of you are aware, DeLaveaga is overcrowded. There are now 630 students in a school built for 450. The impacts are significant and include a shortage of classrooms, overworked staff and traffic problems, as well as short changes to students in the cafeteria, play zones, restrooms, library, life lab, etc.
According to the school district, DLV could have as many as 670 for the 09-10 school year. So far, the district's efforts to fix the problem have failed--including a plan to move Two-Way/Dos Alas out of DLV.
Without a new idea, the district may close a music/art room or install even more "portables" on the playground in order to accommodate new students and an additional first grade class next year.
Due to these issues and many more--and based on the guiding belief that any solution must support the common interests of the entire school--a group of concerned parents have a proposal to ease the overcrowding: The DeLaveaga Compromise
1. Invest currently available district funds in facility improvements and increased staffing--with key improvements in place for start of 2009-10 school year, if not before:
-Additional staffing:
---Assistant Principal
---Additional Custodian and 2 Yard Duties
---Additional Classroom Aides
-Reconfiguration/replacement of old temporary "portable" buildings
-Upgraded play spaces, equipment, library and cafeteria
-Upgraded path through back of campus to Park Way to encourage bike/walk to school
-Parking/traffic mitigation, possibly including adding additional parking/drop-off capacity in front of school and opening-up second pedestrian entrance on Prospect Heights
2. Cap enrollment at current level.
3. Guarantee admission to all students in DLV attendance area.
4. DLV becomes home for Dos Alas program in its current K-5 configuration.
5. School district to be responsible for taking steps to ensure enrollment doesn't exceed current levels--without denying access by students in the DLV enrollment area.
6. Community participation
-Establish school-based task force to implement changes
-Invite community-wide input for site redesign--especially including architects, landscape architects and civil engineers
Why Support This Proposal Because it:
-Addresses overcrowding issues at DeLaveaga Elementary
-Invests in DeLaveaga to meet current capacity
-Addresses traffic and parking issues
-Eliminates possible Two-Way/Dos Alas move and addresses related controversies
-Has support from both mainstream parents and Two-Way/Dos Alas parents
Is this proposal a done deal Absolutely not. We need your input and your support.
Now is the time to fight for DeLaveaga.

Como muchos de usted ya saben, la escuela DeLaveaga está muy llena. Actualmente hay 630 estudiantes en una escuela que fué construida para 450. El impacto es muy grande e incluye la falta de salones de clases, personal escolar con muchísimo trabajo y problemas de tráfico. También se ve el impacto en la cafetería, en las áreas de juego, baños, biblioteca, en el jardín del laboratorio de vida, etc.
De acuerdo a la información brindada por el distrito, DLV podría tener 670 estudiantes para el año escolar 2009-10. Hasta el momento, han fallado los esfuerzos del distrito para solucionar este problema—incluyendo el plan de trasladar el programa Two-Way/Dos Alas fuera de DLV.
Sin una nueva idea, el distrito podría cerrar un salón de música/arte o instalar más salones “portables” en el área de juego para que el próximo año se pueda acomodar otra clase de primer grado.
Debido a este asunto y mucho más—y basados en la creencia de que cualquier solución debe de apoyar el interés común de toda la escuela—un grupo de padres de familia han preparado una propuesta para aliviar la sobre población de nuestra escuela: El Compromiso de DeLaveaga
Invertir fondos disponibles del distrito en mejoras al centro escolar y en el incremento de personal—con mejoras claves para comenzar el año escolar 2009-10, o antes:
-Personal Adicional:
---Asistente de Director(a)
---Un Encargado de Limpieza y 2 Supervisores del área de juego
---Más Ayudantes de Clases
-Reconfiguración/reemplazo de salones portables
-Mejorar las áreas de juego, equipo, biblioteca y cafeteria
-Mejorar el camino que se encuentra detrás de la escuela a Park Way para que más personas caminen/manejen bicicleta a la escuela
-Aliviar el tráfico/estacionamiento, con la posibilidad de incluir estacionamiento adicional/capacidad para dejar a los estudiantes en frente de la escuela y abrir otra entrada de peatones en Prospect Heights
-Poner un límite de matriculas al nivel actual.
-Garantizar matrícula a todos los estudiantes que viven en el área de DLV.
-DLV se convierte en hogar del programa Dos Alas en la actual configuración de K-5.
-El distrito escolar se hace responsable por tomar los pasos necesarios para asegurar que el número de estudiantes no sobrepasa el nivel actual —sin negar acceso a los estudiantes que viven dentro del área de DLV.
-Participación Comunitaria
--Establecer un comité escolar para implementar cambios
--Invitar a que la comunidad de su opinión para el rediseño de la escuela—incluir especialmente a arquitectos, especialistas de paisaje, e ingenieros civiles

the district is still quiet but i hear from parents every day about how bad the lunchroom and playground situation has gotten. having all these names on the list is helping us keep pressure on the board to look at the compromise plan instead of just adding more portables.

im honestly blown away by the energy behind this and it feels like people are finally listening to our concerns about the overcrowding. seeing so many other parents and neighbors step up to demand a better plan for our school is exactly what we needed to keep this momentum moving.

630 kids in a building made for 450 is just insanity. My son has barely any room to play at recess because of those portables. Something has to give.
