Iroquois Nursing Home, Inc.

4600 Southwood Heights Drive

Jamesville, NY 13078-9595

The Shadow Hill Community, which lies just South of the Iroquois Nursing Home, has been communicating with representatives from your facility regarding the guests and employees smoking outside or parked cars along Southwood Heights Drive for several months. We recognize that NYS law (http://htnys.org/advocacy/elerts/?elertid=5545) says that you can’t smoke on the property of a hospital or nursing home except in a designated area. Although this law has been in existence since 2013, the people parking and standing along Southwood Heights Drive has recently become a problem for our community.

We respectively request that the Iroquois Nursing Home create a discrete area on the property designated as a smoking area. Ideally this area would be in a safe location away from roadway and homes. We understand that the Iroquois has asked employees to refrain standing in the street and littering with cigarette buds, but the problem persists. This smoking along Southwood Heights Drive poses a danger to the smokers’ safety, creates a driving hazard, causes litter along the street, creates an unpleasant aesthetic to this relatively new home development and creates a loitering problem making residents of the community very uncomfortable.

In addition to this request, we have been in contact with the Town of Onondaga to help facilitate finding a safe alternative for your employees and guests to smoke, one that might be appropriate for both your regulations and our neighborhood.

The individuals listed below and on attached pages stand in solidarity to work with you find alternatives for where your guests and employees to smoke. However, the community also stands in solid opposition to the current situation of individuals smoking in the street, in the grass and in their cars along Southwood Heights Drive is unacceptable.

We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to amendable alternative area being designated immediately. We believe taking immediate action will restore the once pleasant relationship between the community and Iroquois Nursing Home, Inc.

The momentum around our neighborhood is undeniable. It is time for the nursing home to acknowledge the safety concerns we all share.

The amount of butts in the grass and on the road is just discusting. Its not fair that we have to look at this every single day when we drive into our own neighborhood.

SO dangerous when people just stand in the road. Someone is going to get hit by a car eventually. Please move them away from the street.

This is a significant safety issue and negatively impacts the positive and family oriented image of our neighborhood.

When I drive past everyday and my 4year old asks why people have to smoke and throw cigarettes on the road, this is a problem. She has noticed the large amount of trash (butts) being left on our street when we are out for walks and wants to pick them up. This is a problem that needs to stop!

Safety is my concern since traffic is busy on this road. Something else needs to be arranged.

smoking on the main road side with cars stopping along the road not only jams the traffic, but also create a potential satety issue.
