Motivated South French Broad community members would like to create more reasons for friends, families, and neighbors to picnic, play and enjoy the biggest downtown park in Asheville.

We would like to add a "Ace Place" beginner friendly disc golf course in Aston Park. Disc golf is one of the fastest growing and most popular sports in the country. It is a flying disc sport in which players throw a disc at a target with rules similar to golf.

Benefits include:

  • Disc golf has a very low barrier to entry and can be played by people of all ages and abilities. All you need is a disc that costs less than $10 (we plan to have discs to borrow at the Tennis Center)
  • It will be the closest and most accessible public disc golf course in WNC (it is on 2 bus routes and walkable from multiple apartment complexes)
  • The course will have very low impact on the park: targets blend into their surroundings and use the peripheral space around the park leaving plenty of space for people to relax on the grass, under trees, and use the structures.

Aston Park is an underutilized green space in downtown Asheville that needs an infusion of interest and family-friendly wholesome activity. Our vision is to create a safe space for an increasingly dense urban population to meet, relax and play. We feel that disc golf is compatible with the Asheville Parks and Recreation’s goal of offering “a variety of wellness-, education-, and culture-related programs for Ashevillians of all ages”.

We, the undersigned, are residents of the South French Broad and surrounding neighborhoods and we support this proposal to install a disc golf course at Aston Park.
