We would like having Shakespeare offices in our neighborhood (at 501 EYE St. SW, Washington DC 20024) but are strongly against tacking 7 - 8 floors of commercial high-rise apartments on top of the 2 floor Shakespeare office building to pay for it.
It's not the beauty of the building, it's the height, it's the density of people and cars, it's the noise, it's the quality of life. We do NOT want to see:
- Up to 350 new residents and 75 employees crammed into a 164,142 SF high-rise without green space or much set-back.
- 130-plus new cars dumped into the neighborhood that already has zero parking capacity, where they will roam the streets competing with current residents and with future residents from 20-plus nearby sites now under construction (or planned), not to mention future traffic from the Wharf.
- An easy-going neighborhood offering a placid lifestyle, unique in Washington DC, converted into a frenzied high-pressured area (like Capitol South and NOMA).
Please help us conserve the last island of tranquility so close to downtown Washington.

The emails from the planning office have been predictably vague and dismissive. I am tired of pulling teeth to get a straight answer but we are continuing to push for a formal review of the density impact. It is clear they hope we just get frustrated and stop paying attention.

Reaching this milestone feels heavy given how much resistance we are facing from the developers. It is exhausting to fight for the character of our neighborhood but seeing this groundswell of support reminds me why we cannot back down now.

Parking is all ready a major problem in this area. We don't even have space for a visitor or loved one who wants to visit and park. Please give us a break.
Keep SEU site as low-rise and zoning R-3: NO High-Rise. Please do not approve building a 10-story commercial high rise in a residential neighborhood. Especially next to elementary school.
Please do not rezone. It would negatively effect the character with the established neighborhood. We need more family housing options not more over-priced studio/1 bedroom apartment buildings.
As an owner and resident in SW DC for 8 years, the 9 story design does not fit the neighborhood and I am totally against it. DC should not change the zoning. The height is inappropriate to in a neighborhood of 2 and 3 story row homes and street parking is already at a premium. This is a flawed plan for our neighborhood, no one who lives here is in favor of it.
The small lot and the location in a residential section of 3 story townhouses makes a 10 story building an eyesore and improper. Furthermore, the shadows from a 10 story building will destroy the sunshine on the playground. A 10 story residential complex will be the source of generations of complaints as the noise from the playground will be trapped in an echo canyon.
This neighborhood is special because of it's old world feel and clear skyline. It would be a shame to make this look like every other part of the city. In particular as our neighborhood is already changing so much, let's protect what we can.
Developpers'greed in DC is just staggering, and the fact they tried to slip this condo building in the plans, hoping no one would notice says it all.

I purposely chose to live in SW twenty-five years ago because it was quiet, green, diverse and had open skies and views across the Washington Channel and Potomac River. I am not against development or progress but I am against the onslaught of high-rises being approved for our neighborhood. City planners need to deny the re-zoning request for this parcel of land.
