O'shenne was diagnosed when she was 3 years old and denied the therapy she desperately needs in order for her to be able to function independantly. Although O'shenne is in need of IBI therapy she also is in great need of behavioural services and speech and language therapy. O'shenne is highly capable of learning from these services and what they offer. To be much more understood O'shenne is an autistic child that is left to be without any services since diagnosis. IBI is the application of the science of ABA in an intensive manner. The National Research Council suggests 25 hours per week, 12 months per year and begin as early as possible. IBI has a much stronger empirical basis than virtually any other intervention used with children with autism and is considered ‘‘best practice’’ for young children with autism, O'shenne is now seven years old and is still waiting for acceptance of IBI or speech and language therapy. I as a parent and advocate of autism and the children who have this condition are quite concerned of the future and what lies ahead for them. These children are highly intelligent and function excellently behind routine and structure. We just need to get them all these services and stop the trend of leaving any child with autism in the dark. The saddest thing about this is , IBI services cost $80,000 annually per child and the doctors and specialist's always stress the cost and never stress the need for the children to recieve it. So imagine having to sell your home to provide payment for IBI services for your child. What if you have a family and what happens to them and their needs? The Government needs to stop denying service to these children and give it to them , plain and simple! O'shenne and I are asking for your help and your understanding of this situation so that we can move on with enjoying life and language to the fullest. I want to one day talk with my daughter and be confident in having a response that we could both understand and be happy with.
