I am a parent of a graduating senior at Cranston West High School. While we realize that no commencement ceremony decision has been made, we are also acutely aware of other high schools, colleges and universities that have cancelled their commencement ceremonies altogether or are currently planning on executing a virtual graduation experience. This petition is an attempt to get ahead of any decision making and let the administration know that having our hard working students participate in an actual graduation is not only important but a crucial part of their high school journey. High school graduation is a momentous occasion and simply cannot be cancelled outright or done online. This petition is asking that commencement be postponed to a later date, possibly in the late Spring or Summer months when the risks surrounding this virus have subsided. Our children have worked hard to earn this privilege. Please take the time to sign this petition if you are in agreement. And also take the time to pass it forward to as many people in the Cranston West community as possible, including students, faculty and administrators. Thank you for your time.

The level of engagement this petition has received underscores how deeply the Cranston West community values the tradition of an in-person graduation. This momentum provides a clear mandate as we continue our efforts to advocate for a delayed ceremony.

These seniors and their parents deserve the consideration of a graduation no matter how it’s done in the name of safety and social distancing.

The kids in and Cranston West I feel do deserve a recognition ceremony, as well as other cities and towns in the state. I as a parent of 3 loved seeing my children walk that walk. Every parent deserves to feel PROUD. Smithfield

There is plenty of time to hold a commencement and prom when this is over before these seniors go off to college

The seniors deserve a graduation to recognize all of their hard work. It wouldn’t be fair to take this away for these students as they have watched others before them walk the stage and will continue to watch others after them. They deserve that right too. It wouldn’t be fair that this class has to have such an accomplishment taken from them. Reschedule it to a later date!!

As part of the rituals in our life there are certain milestones we gaze upon as we walk through life. The graduation ceremony is one of those big milestones, that every young adult looks forward to. It is their reward for all the years of work and growth that they have invested in their high school career. As adults who have already enjoyed this moment in our life we should strive to do everything we can to allow the graduates of 2020, to have their moment. It is not their fault that the world stopped during their senior year. It is not their fault that a health epidemic stole the final moments of their senior year- their prom, award ceremonies, senior trips, and graduation preparation rituals. If the world can stop and shelter in place to protect vulnerable Americans from a virus- we can make arrangements for graduation ceremonies once this is over and before they begin their College careers. Were there is a will there is a way!
