This petition is now closed and has been passed to Wiltshire Council.  Many thanks to all those who signed and commented.

Wiltshire Council is planning to increase car parking charges across Wiltshire, including in Corsham, from 1 April 2011.  The Corsham Chamber of Commerce is very concerned about the impact this will have on local businesses, workers and shoppers, especially given that free parking is available in other local supermarkets.  We are also concerned about the impact on local tourism.

While we understand that the Council needs to save money in the current climate, we are not convinced that increasing parking charges will generate extra revenue, and feel strongly that the damage it will cause the local community would outweigh any potential revenue benefit.

The Government has recently scrapped planning guidelines which encouraged Councils to set higher parking charges and limit the numbers of parking spaces in town centres on the basis that such charges unfairly penalise drivers, and increase unsightly on-street parking congestion - putting the safety of drivers, cyclists and pedestrians at risk.  The Council's proposals are out of step with this change.

PLEASE SIGN OUR E-PETITION AGAINST THIS INCREASE, AND ENCOURAGE OTHER LOCAL RESIDENTS AND BUSINESS OWNERS TO DO SO TOO.

 Thank you for your support
