The goal of this petition is to help persuade the Government of Ontario to change their minds about eliminating the Community Start-Up and Maintenance Benefit (CSUMB). We feel that the CSUMB is an important program and if it is eliminated it will have very harsh ramifications for not only the people who use it but the Government as well.
Access to housing that is safe and affordable is a key element of health. The elimination of the CSUMB has the potential to increase the number of Ontarians who are unstably housed or who become homeless. Without the CSUMB, women in transition shelters fleeing domestic violence won’t be able to afford moving costs when they find a safe home. People trying to move from homeless shelters into housing will be impacted, as well as people living in housing wrought with bedbug infestations, mold and other poor housing conditions that lead to serious health problems. Many others, including people who are moving out of institutions such as jail or impatient treatment will also be affected.
Cutting the benefit will have significant negative health impacts for people who are already among the most vulnerable in Ontario, including the homeless, women, children, and people with disabilities.
This is so unfair. Rent is already way too high and how are people supposed to escape abusive situations without any help? The shelters are already full enough as it is.

Bad idea government. You save money now but it costs way more later when everyone ends up back on the streets or in the hospital.

Ridiculous cuts. Keep the benefit.
