Sir Liam Donaldson has announced his resignation from the position of Chief Medical Officer. This outcome acknowledges the significant loss of professional confidence cited throughout this campaign. I am now transitioning my focus to monitoring the transition period to ensure the structural failures of Modernising Medical Careers are finally addressed.

We the undersigned, believe that Professor Sir Liam Donaldson should resign from the post of Chief Medical Officer for England for the following reasons: He is the chief architect of Modernising Medical Careers which the majority of doctors believe will lower professional standards. He made the following quote on the 9th Jan 2007: \"The 4 UK CMOs believe that MMC will be good for patients, good for doctors and good for the NHS. We have therefore made it clear we do not consider deferment of MMC would be helpful and think it would cause greater uncertainty for trainees (particularly those in the second Foundation year)\" This statement: a) contradicts the views of most of the medical profession; b) confirms that the CMO disagreed with the BMA warnings about delaying the implementation of MMC; and c) clearly indicates a favourable attitude toward MMC FY2 trainees over traditional SHOs. He has lost the confidence of members of the MMC team as evidenced by the following damning statements in resignation letters from Professor Crockard, ex-National lead for MMC and Alex Liakos, ex-MMC medical student advisor. The MMC team appears to have been sidelined on various issues: Crockard: \"From my point of view, this project has lacked clear leadership from the top for a very long time\" \"I am increasingly aware that I have responsibility but less and less authority\" \"the overriding message coming back from the profession is that it has lost confidence in the current recruitment system\" Alex Liakos: \"Even at the highest levels you (Donaldson) have been seen to charge professionals with responsibility but withhold authority\" \"It is not acceptable for you (Donaldson) to hide behind the responsibility you have dispensed to MMC and at the same time maintain your authority so you can push through your own agenda\" He made the following quote in BMJ Careers (7th April 2007) \"Sir George Godber, one of my predecessors (CMO 1960-73). A giant of his time. He mastered the three qualities needed by a good CMO;

About time he stepped down. The whole system is a mess and trainees are suffering because of his ego.

MMC is a disaster. Just look at the turnover of staff leaving the project. Someone needs to take responsibility for this failure.

He has absolutely zero clue what is going on at the ground level in hospitals. Completely out of touch.

RIDICULOUS that he still has his job. He ignored every warning sign given to him.

He has lost the trust of all the doctors. It is literally impossible to work under these conditions anymore.
