The City of Coquitlam recently voted 6-3 with councillors Bonita Zarrillo, Lou Sekora, Mae Reid, Chris Wilson, Craig Hodge, and Neal Nicholson voting in favor of a motion to use the Como Lake/Mariner Hill arterial route for heavy trucks. Mayor Richard Stewart and councillors Brent Asmundson, & Terry O'Neill opposed the motion.

The decision was made with NO consultation with the residents most affected.

This is NOT a designated truck route and the City Engineer recommended against it. Mariner Hill has a grade up to 11% (most truck routes max out at 8%), has very sharp curves, no center barrier, sidewalks, houses on both sides, bus stops along the route, a school and park, blind driveways, a traffic light at the bottom, and absolutely no margin for error.

Como Lake Avenue has a high volume of elementary and secondary students attending Dr. Charles Best Secondary, Hillcrest Middle School, Parkland Elementary, Porter Elementary, Ecole Banting Middle School, and Queen of All Saints Elementary school. There are also numerous preschools in the Como Lake Avenue area.

The decision allows semis, gravel dump trucks (with trailer), fully loaded concrete trucks etc. the right to use Como Lake Avenue and Mariner Hill to drive through Coquitlam during the trial period.

Should not enough complaints be received by the city before the end of the trial period (September 30 is the deadline) they may make the decision permanent!
