The council finally voted to deny the rezoning request and I am honestly still reeling from the news because I really thought they might push it through anyway. We actually pulled this off and saved the land from those 812 homes so please keep an eye on things just in …

The undersigned below are concerned citizens against the rezoning request by the Virginia Beach based developer, Napolitano Homes, to expand their previously approved Mallory Scott Farm Development from 265 single family homes to 812 homes of mixed styles. This development runs from Gatling Point along Battery Park Road to the field in front of Wellington Estates. This will put additional strain on the local roads, schools, and emergency services in the Town of Smithfield and surrounding areas in the County. This could also lead to unknown environmental impacts to the ecosystem of the Moon Creek and Pagan River. This petition is directed at the Town Council and Planning Commission of Smithfield.

***When signing, if you reside in the county, please list your zip code in the comments box so the commission can see how many are local to the county***

I honestly cannot believe we just hit a thousand names on this thing because what started as a few frantic messages to my neighbors has turned into a massive wave of people who actually care about the creek and the traffic and the whole vibe of this town. My phone has not stopped buzzing all morning and I keep checking the screen just to make sure the number is real because seriously who knew so many of us felt the same way about keeping that land open and quiet.

I really never thought this would gain this much steam but here we are and honestly it feels like people are finally starting to see what is at stake for the river and the roads. It is wild to see so many people from the county speaking up about this rezoning and honestly it makes me feel better about the meetings we have ahead of us.

Neither roads nor James River Bridge could support such increase in population. The draw of living on this side of James River is the abundance of trees and greenery and untouched areas of land, let’s not turn what we have into another Newport News

I have lived in the Town of Smithfield for 35 years. DO NOT approve this rezoning request! It will destroy the ecosystem of Moone Creek, and irrevocably alter this wonderful small town with traffic, noise, and overwhelming demand on our infrastructure and municipal services.

I pay enough taxes without having to pay more when we have to build more schools. I’m retired living on a fixed income. Takes long enough to get to areas as it is to larger areas. For retired people having to drive at certain times in traffic along 17 is entirely ridiculous!

FOLLOW THE COMREHENSIVE PLAN! There's a reason it was created the way it was. so stick to it and follow it! Smithfield is too special of a place not to honor the dedication and vision of those who formulated it. I'm a 17 year resident.

We are not county residents but we visit Smithfield/Isle of Wight often for a smaller, rural escape from our city. Larger scale housing developments like this would detract from the overall experience and cause us to quit patronizing the area.

zip 23430 O.K. to grow, but without proper accompanying infrastructure growth - roads, sewage, schools, fire, police, etc., then, no. And that includes route 17, as I am sure many new residents would be commuting to the other side of the James River.

I was planning to move to Smithfield when I retire (2 years), but this development will destroy what attracted me to the town in the first place, so I won't be moving.
