I was planning to move to Smithfield when I retire (2 years), but this development will destroy what attracted me to the town in the first place, so I won't be moving.

Wish I saw this petition earlier. We’ve been looking (and made offers) on homes in the Gatling pointe area, seeing this has changed our mind. We are escaping overbuild in southern Chesapeake causing terrible traffic and reduction in quality of life. We have been actively looking for an existing home and a return to small town comfort. We’ll likely look elsewhere.

I do not think the development is appropriate for the character of the Town of Smithfield.

We do not need more development. It will change our small town rural way of life.

Follow the Comprehensive Plan: Allow No Zoning denser than NR (2 houses per BUILDABLE acre = 523 homes). The WANTS of a developer (who does not care about Smithfield) should never cancel out citizens’ higher purpose of maintaining the quality of the thriving and viable community of Smithfield. PC Accusing citizens of mere NIMBY-ism is an insult to citizens and shows lack of foresight. Smithfield citizens love Smithfield and are dedicated to the success of the Town. This is well demonstrated with volunteering, donations, creativity in visual and performing arts, respect for nature and peace. Maintaining the quality of Smithfield & environs inherently impacts the town’s future success. Failure to maintain quality can negatively impact Smithfield’s Tourism Industry, and impede attraction of quality future capital investment. If the Town Council WANTS higher density (Yes-IMBY) they need to make a case for their needs being greater than subjecting Smithfield citizens to deterioration of the quality of the Town. Taxes from new homeowners will not keep up with increased expenses for schools, infrastructure, safety, etc. The County storm surge and wetlands maps plus FEMA’s FIRM (flood) map highlight the detriment of packing higher density housing in Mallory Scott Farm. The right place for higher density housing is near highways, not squeezed between estuaries and wetlands. There are plenty of already approved developments in the Newport Development District. If the Town of Smithfield plays its cards wisely, it will benefit from these developments and not go down the path of destructive over-development destroying the Town’s very quality that attracts visitors to come and support the economy.

People move to Smithfield/ Isle of Wight to have that small town feel. If you overpopulate, you will achieve the opposite. It will be a traffic nightmare and what’s next ? Home Depot, Lowe’s , Walmart? I doubt it!! Let’s overcrowd the stores we have now. I can tell you didn’t do your research otherwise you would know that no other states with small farm towns are dumb enough to do what your doing!! Don’t ruin it for people who want to visit a nice quiet small town.

My husband and I moved to a rural area because it's a rural area. If we can keep big box stores out we should be able to keep this development out.

Just moved to the area for peace and the current feeling is right, the charm of Smithfield will be lost if it keeps growing
