Citizens’ Alliance for the Support Of Arts and Culture ~ (CASAC)

We, the undersigned, support the establishment of an Office of Cultural Affairs by the Town of Hilton Head Island for the purpose of recognizing arts, history, and cultural activities as an economic driver and as an enhancement of the quality of life for residents and visitors. We believe this is critical to the future economic health and success of our community.

The feedback from local artists and business owners confirms that our town is feeling the strain of ignoring its cultural roots. I am currently navigating slow responses from the town council, though I remain convinced that persistent pressure will eventually force their hand.

We have been property owners on HHI for over 10 years and the arts are very important to us. It not only improves quality of life for residents, creates jobs for locals, encourages artists to locate/remain in the area, and it helps promote tourism as having viable alternatives makes HHI more attractive to other vacation spots. This makes sense on so many fronts.

Essential for long term growth and a way to distinguish us from just another beach and golf destination.

I lived on Hilton Head Island over 30 years ago and remember its breathtaking beauty, which will surely be an inspiration for artists of all kinds. The arts improve the quality of life for all age groups and having a center will attract people to visit Hilton Head as a cultural destination.

The Arts create and support children who are smarter in all subjects. They become adults who see more options for themselves and contribute to a higher quality of life for everyone.

I'd love to see an "Arts District" on HH, exempt from sign and zonging standards, where artists can have trendy studios, shops, galleries, and cafes to attract interested craft and visual arts visitors.

The arts scene should INCLUDE all and stop talking so much about ONE venue that automatically gets nearly 1 million each year to stay afloat, and most likely pay salaries. The money should be earmarked. As a 30 year resident, and arts leader here, I am shocked at how so much attention is paid to ONE venue, leaving others stranded. Thank you, Don Hite

Supporting arts and cultural events/activities is a necessary part of any community. Look to places like Gatlinburg (artists circle, etc.) and other known tourist destinations with these attractions for inspiration. Please establish this office as per the study recommendation.
