We, the citizens of Fairburn Georgia ask the Mayor and City Council of Fairburn to vote "NO" on the expansion of dumping areas within the Safeguard Landfill site located on Route 29 near Durham Lakes Golf and Country Club.

There are currently 3 landfills in this Route 29 area. Safeguard paid $750,000 in fees to the City of Fairburn. This fee of $1 per ton represents 1.5 BILLION POUNDS of construction and demolition garbage, including hazardous materials, being dumped in our backyard. The garbage creates a "rotten egg" smell in our community and this horrific odor diminishes the quality of life for our families. Durham Lakes residents have heard year after year that the landfill will be "closed within a year", yet year after year the landfill remains open for business and now it wants to expand its dumping activities.

If the landfill is allowed to expand it will affect property values in the future and will prevent Fairburn from recognizing the City's tag line of "Situated to Succeed". Fairburn cannot be successful if we allow Safeguard Landfill, or any other landfill, to prosper within the confines of Fairburn. Please do not allow Fairburn to be known as "Landfill City". VOTE "NO" TO THE EXPANSION PROJECT.
