Wifi should be reinstated and phones allowed during study hall, flex, passing and lunch. I have no service and cannot even contact my parent to pick me up without the wifi.

I am completely fine with phones being taken away during academic periods (because we’ll, you’re not supposed to use it then anyway) but creating a cellular dead spot where a school should be is a bit of a stretch. Many students need to listen to music or brown noise during study halls to focus and it’s a bit of a hassle to do so on the iPads. I think a compromise for this is to reward good grades and behavior with “Study Hall Flex Time Screen Privileges” that get taken away if you aren’t doing your schoolwork or your grades decline. If you can’t resist the temptation to use your phone in study hall when you already aren’t doing your work and are getting bad grades THEN you can get it taken away. But this policy shouldn’t punish the students who get good grades and don’t take their phones out during class. Yes, social media can have bad affects on mental health but that should be a decision for the parents to decide whether the student is allowed access to social media. I think this is as far as the policy needs to go: -all phones taken away during academic periods -phone privileges during study hall or flex that can be taken away -complete phone access during passing time and lunch Students need to be able to contact parents/guardians (especially with the up-tic in school shootings). But also for completely normal reasons: Hey mom, rehearsal is going late today can you pick me up at 6? Hey Dad practice was cancelled today can Jack’s mom drive us home? Etc etc. Let students practice digital responsibility. FREE THE PHONES

Pls just give me my phone, I. DONT. FEEL. SAFE. WITH. RACIST. PEOPLE. NEAR. ME 24/7. AND. WHO. TRY. TO. TOUCH. ME. INAPPROPRIATELY, I would really appreciate it if I can pretend to be on my phone in the hallways so they leave me alone:)

This petition has been endorsed by Smokey Neo. I hope that with my support and the support of all others who sign this petition that we get this cell phone policy modified.

I’m a sophomore who has never used social media. My phone is a cheap six-year-old Android and I still find this policy frustrating. It sounds counterintuitive, but I (and many others I’ve talked to) now spend far more mental energy on our phones throughout the day than last year. When I have to constantly remember to grab my phone at the end of class—or determine where exactly I left it—I open up a new mental loop of worry that leaves me less able to concentrate and my focus more scattered. For as many students as this happens to, that’s a lot of academically focused time lost. Furthermore, when some people have cellular data and others don’t, this policy just opens up an inequality. Thank you, Sam, for starting this petition—the school is going to be so much better with this change. —A
