Carolina Bays 31 Extension - Opposition to Route 17 Alternative

We are opposed to any version of the extension

I am opposed to any extension of the proposed highway

-wife and I are in our first home, I began working as a law enforcement officer at OIB, I first moved into my grandparents old house as they wanted to move and live on the coast. They then changed their mind and forced me out of the house so I had to pack up and find living arrangements. A buddy took me in and I packed up my valuables and non essential items into a storage unit in sunset beach as I vowed my wife and I will be in coastal south west Brunswick county once she graduated college. My buddy 7 months later decided it was time for him to move back to Alabama so that put me packing up more and finding housing with my parents. My wife was in college at the time for nursing and had no other home to go to before graduation on break and had to stay with me at my parents as her parents split up and moved to lumberton and new Bern and sold her childhood home once she began school. Once she graduated we purchased our first home in a cul de sac and established and put everything we had into our first home. A year later started a family and have all plans of raising our child in a beautiful growing area. We have no where to go in a time of 90 day eviction and with housing prices in our area going up, an 80% tax value payout would not cover what’s needed for us to start over once again. Public housing for a law enforcement officer and nurse is not ideal. We as a community are asking to re think and re evaluate the routes that are “favorable” and please spare our neighborhood, these are a few points I have created and I’m sure others have their own as to why this is a bad idea to go through an entire neighborhood older population lives in majority of neighborhood so relocating would be more difficult -multiple law enforcement officers in neighborhood and job doesn’t pay for owning 2 houses and relocating would be harder -following US 17 from 904/seaside rd would be the best route out travel to bring commerce to sunset beach, Ocean Isle Beach and the rest of

I do not support any version of the Carolina Bays Extension

The current "preferred" route #4 with the interchange at 904 and 17 would not only impact existing homes and residents in communities like Ocean Ridge but also the many long standing established businesses and churches on the stretch of 17 between 904 and 130. Utilizing the area north of Old Shallotte Road to connect directly somewhere with 130 would not impact on existing developed areas. This would not only be more cost effective but also less intrusive on current residents and business owners.

US 17 is already overwhelmed with traffic, just look at the back ups where it intersects with Main Street in Shallotte and NC 211 in Supply. Thousands of additional homes have been approved in SW Brunswick County which will make it even worse. Going forward the need is for a connection between SC 31 and I 140 leaving US 17 for local traffic. Alternative 4a would provide for this and allow for a connection between NC 130 and I 140 in the future. This is what SC did adding a limited access highway and maintaining US 17 for local traffic. Anything else is shortsighted.

I strongly oppose the Carolina Bays Extension that will impact the Ocean Ridge Community and adjacent golf courses.

I live in Ocean Ridge Plantation and am very much opposed to the current proposed route which will ruin our little community as well as nearby businesses! There is already a great deal of building being done in the area and this project will make it un-livable for current residents. The other option is much less disruptive so please reconsider !

I strongly object to destroying property in Ocean Ridge Plantation. A lot of people move to Ocean Isle bc of Ocean Ridge. We had a tornado 5 years ago that destroyed a lot of homes in Ocean Ridge. Some of us have still not forgotten that. Please save our community.

I strongly disagree with destroying property of Ocean Ridge Plantation. Ocean Ridge has been very good to all Brunswick businesses and property owners

I live in Ocean Ridge Plantation and I oppose the option that will ruin our community including businesses and houses of worship. I support the general idea but there MUST be a less disruptive solution for the community as well a more economical means of achieving this objective for the state!

I support option 4A as it is the one that will provide a much needed second evacuation route from west Brunswick County in case of storms such as we saw in Sept. 2024 when parts of Rt. 17 were closed due to washed out roadbeds. I would rather see NO future Rt 31 expansion than the proposed option 4 that will put more traffic onto Rt 17 through the eastern part of Brunswick County.

I oppose Route 4 and the obvious destruction of our Ocean Ridge community at Rt 17 & 904

I am a homeowner inOcean Ridge Plantation. I oppose an interstate Highway at the front gates of this community. It is not the right location for this highway.

I am opposed to the disruption that would result in option 4 and suggest the alternative of a road inland.

It appears that option 4 is more disruptive than 4a. I voice my opposition to option 4.

Using the inland route will result in less ruination of communities, like Ocean Ridge Plantation, and the many businesses along the proposed route. These businesses are greatly needed by the people living Also, the intersection of 904 and 17 is one of the busiest, if not the busiest, along 17. Having the new highway merge at that point could be a traffic disaster.
