It passed and I am honestly just buzzing with relief because this actually happened. It feels surreal to finally see those protections written into the law but we definitely need to keep watching how everything is implemented moving forward.

Canadian Feminists in Support of Bill C-16

We are writing to support Bill C-16, a bill designed to protect gender identity and gender expression in the Canadian Human Rights Act and Criminal Code.

As feminists we believe that this bill will further the rights of all Canadians, especially transgender and gender diverse people living in Canada today. Given the fact that transgender women are more likely to face poverty, homelessness, barriers to education, and violence than are cisgender (non-transgender) women, this bill is deeply needed and long overdue.

In the name of feminism, we strongly urge the Canadian Senate to pass Bill C-16 without further delay.

I have been reading through all the comments and the stories people are sharing about why this matters are just completely overwhelming in the best possible way. It is exhausting to keep pushing when it feels like the Senate is moving at a snails pace but knowing so many of you are behind this keeps me going even when I want to just stare at a wall for an hour. I am working on getting some more legal minds to weigh in on the specific language of the bill because honestly the complexity of it all is a lot for one person to track.

We are getting so near to that first hundred mark and honestly my brain is just buzzing thinking about how much clearer the message becomes when we have more eyes on this. If you can just blast the link out to a group chat or maybe just one person who gets why this bill is so overdue it would be such a huge help to build that momentum right now.

Helping Transgender people is a holy and righteous act consistent with biblical teaching. Rachel Clark, Master of Theological Studies, Emmanuel College of Victoria University in the University of Toronto.

Including gender expression and gender identity in our Human Rights Code, does not take away the rights of cis-women, or anyone's freedom of speech. The fact that people are threatened by transgender rights points to how much we need these rights, and the government to support them.

My feminism is about transforming the systems that create and maintain gender inequality. It celebrates gender diversity and seeks protection against gender-based prejudice and discrimination.

Thank you for evolving our society and stopping the bigotry. As a woman I was saddened by the bigoted lobbying by Hilla Kerner of Vancouver Rape Relief. This is not how most women in Vancouver and BC feel. I would prefer to share space with Trans women than with bigots like Hilla Kerner and Vancouver Rape Relief.

As a lifelong feminist and activist it is utterly against the equality goals of feminism to discriminate based on birth sex. I support all women. Within our gender there are enough levels of privilege and enough intersections that we cannot begin to exclude any group.

In my circle of close friends I have two that prefer not to identify as girl or boy and use the pronoun "they" and one friend who is a trans girl. In my children's school, there are two kids that identify as trans. I believe all these people and everyone else who isn't binary or cis should have the same rights as me.
