This is a call on the ADAMS Center in Sterling, VA to rescind their invitation of Hamza Yusuf (see flyer below) for his recent shameful and insensitive remarks about the people of Syria saying that:
- Allah is humiliating them for trying to humiliate Bashar al-Assad (Victim-blaming)
- Showing a clear lack of moral clarity by laughing at them and asking "how did that revolution turn out for you"
- For shaming them for seeking refuge in other countries
- For misrepresenting ahadith and the deen to fit his own narrative
What made these words more dangerous was the location where the speech took place, Turkey. There is already growing hostility towards Syrian refugees especially with the election of the new Mayor of Istanbul who has promised to send all the refugees back home. These types of statements to locals stirs up more hate and furthers the divide.

Please don’t invite Hamza Yusuf, his remarks in Syria shows great disrespect to human decency and lives and shows ignorance and lack of judgement about Islam.
I used to attend ADAMS, in Herndon, and I’m disappointed in your decision to invite HY, when he’s mocked our Syrian brothers and sisters, many of whom did no wrong. I asked the Board to rethink the invite.
This petition is not right. Please do not take his words out of context. Hamza Yusuf is a legendary figure in American scholarship. The real problem is people wanting to drive discord and strengthen the wedge between people and scholars . Before you sign, become educated about his mannerisms, have husna dhun, stand for a real cause, and do not allow group think to sway you in unjustified anger.
If he said all that, he must not be allowed to ever speak again. This is inhuman to use a blanket statement and wrap every single person as young and few days old who died in the whomb of her mother due to shelling “ culprit of civil war”
This pet scholar of the tyrants who laughs at the martyrs of Syria and considers them to be humiliated by Allah out of a basic, basic mistake in hadith does not deserve a platform from the Muslim community.

I want to tell him: Hamza, you don’t have a brother who was tortured and died in Assad’s prison like mine. So, shut your mouth and get busy with your life. I praise Allah that he showed us your real face.
