The problem was that she stated that she would only use simple integer calculations because of the calculator constraint so that is what you were expecting. I dont think anybody here is struggling with 70x80 but I think having the confidence to be able to check your calculations with a calculator to make sure that that is not the reason for the odd numbers would be a big help. Also if we were allowed calculators then the integers wouldn't be an issue.

Had I been able to use a calculator, I could have avoided a simple arithmetic error that cost me 6 marks on a single question on the exam, and possibly two letter grade points.

I agree with Kaylor, the numbers in the question were annoying because the calculation did not result in a whole number. Reasoning why the fraction was indeed the only possible answer is what wasted time for me. A calculator wouldn't have helped in this case. Like Professor Su said in class, you should really know how to do 70 x 80 without having to use a calculator.

I think that not allowing calculators ads stress that is completely not needed. Allowing calculators will also help allow us to complete questions faster, rather than having to constantly be wasting time on unnecessary mental calculations.

Signing this because of wasted time due to the numbers not working out, I found the calculations easy but wasted probably 20 minutes thinking something was wrong because I ended u with a fraction.
