BULGARIA'S ABANDONED CHILDREN was a documentary aired on bbc4 Sept. 13 repeated on bbc2 sunday 18th november in the u.k. it is about a care home called Mogilino where children are abandoned by there parents. Mogilino care home have children with a variety of problems, many are blind or deaf and some are unable to leave there beds, they are left there all day, many are wasting away. Few of the children can talk, not necessarily because they are unable but rather no one has ever taught them how. Abandoned into the hands of the staff, these children inhabit a bleak uncaring world, so starved of normal everyday stimulus that many have taken to rocking slowly and constantly in their chairs just for something to do. The younger children spend most of the day in there beds or left on a potty. These children live empty lives, their minds trying to cope with the total lack of stimulation and love, by self-harming and rocking in such a purposeful and often violent way. Their misery is deep-rooted from the many, many years they have been there. What really matters is the condition of the children themselves, wasted limbs, bed sores, chronically dry and cracked skin, soggy thumbs that are sucked for a long period of time without medical help, relentless, rocking and self-harming, cuts and bruises to the body. The children lack access to sunlight and fresh air they are deficient in vitamins, mineral and nutrients for essential growth â

I am currently consolidating the documentation regarding conditions at Mogilino to submit to the relevant oversight committees in Bulgaria. Several human rights organizations have contacted me to discuss potential advocacy pathways for these children. Expect a summary of these institutional responses as soon as my meetings conclude.
