A birthing centre is essential...women should have the choice

I had my son there. It was a great experience.

More options for more comfortable births!

I believe that this is a necessary facility to help mothers to be more comfortable through those hours of pain that bring human life into the world. Why should we be restricted to doing what a doctor wants just so that we're in and out of the hospital as quickly as possible, with little regard for the requests and comfort of the one doing all the work- the mother?

It is time that women in Barbados and perhaps the rest of the region have access to more birthing choices with the professional guidance of trained midwives and other medical/ non-medical health workers.

This is an absolute necessity here in Barbados!!

I had a water birth, here in Barbados almost 7 years ago with the birth of my son. It was the most beautiful experience of my life. I was allowed to move at my own pace, get up and walk around, do whatever I needed to during my labour. A Birthing Centre is highly needed.

This is so overdue! Birthing mothers deserve to have choice in birthing methods and there should be a place in Barbados where that choice can be exercised.

As a proud Bajan, a midwifery student, and a public health consultant with extensive experience in maternal and child health, I implore the Barbados Government to fund a Birth Centre in the island. This is not a new concept; internationally birth centres are amazing, cost-effective facilities that ensures birth parents and their families can have the birth experience they desire...or should I say are entitled to. Most hospital admissions for women are for low-risk pregnancies. This adds an unnecessary cost to the already burdened health care system. Birth is a normal event in human life cycle, and well before hospitals, we've been giving birth anywhere and everywhere. Choice of birthplace has been established as a key right for birth parents, and Barbados needs to open up more options for its citizens and future citizens. The birth centre will save Barbados money, medical personnel resources, allow families who cannot afford a private room to be present for the birth of their child (one should never miss such a phenomenal moment), increase support for parents in the post-natal period...the list of benefits is endless. More importantly, having a well-established link between the birth centre and the hospital will ensure that if transfer of care is needed (in the event of an emergency), continuity of care would have already been well-established. The main reason that medical errors happen in cases of transfer, is that there is poor communication between one provider and another. Canada, specifically in Ontario, has a fantastic model of how this can be established, as well as the UK, Australia, New Zealand etc. Having a lower-cost option for Bajans to access prenatal care out of pocket is another key benefit of the birth centre. Let's catch up to the rest of the World and ensure that Barbados is once again a regional leader in health care!

I believe its a great idea for mother to be comfortable while giving birth in an enviroment such like the birthing centre .ladies let's all go hand in hand to make this thing work. Birthing centre in BIM !!!!
