Better Birthing in Bim, is a Barbados based charity whose primary focus is creating a positive change for local child birth. We seek to educate, and inform all key stakeholders of the need for empowered birthing experiences. We understand that resources both human and financial are limited at the state-run inistituion which is why we believe we need to get back to the basics. Child birth is not a new phenomenom; women have been conceiving and delivering babies since the beginning of human existence; however, birth has become so medicalized that it is now approached with dread and despair rather then with reverence and compassion.
When we were approached by a passionate concerned citizen, Makiba Neblett, we realised that this issue needed to be on the fore front of our efforts. Makiba's petition highlighted key areas that were near and dear to the hearts of our team, the need to move, eat, and sometime even dance while in labour. The need to have loved ones present during this exciting rite of passage, the need to have a caregiver who respects and honors the birthplan of the mother; and most of all a safe environment for moms and dads to feel empowered and thoroughly satisfied during and after birth. We are asking all interested parties who wish to see a difference in the way our children are brought into the world, to speak up and speak out for change.

We birthed our two children with the calming guidance of the Family Birthing Centre. Support systems like these need to be available & cherished.
I am excited about the prospect of another birthing centre in Barbados. There should be no debate about the need for an option that empowers expectant mothers and families and lowers the risk of medical issues. I hope that the Ministry of Health recognises all the benefits and comes on board ASAP!!
I had a water birth, here in Barbados almost 7 years ago with the birth of my son. It was the most beautiful experience of my life. I was allowed to move at my own pace, get up and walk around, do whatever I needed to during my labour. A Birthing Centre is highly needed.
I had both my babies at the Family Birthing Centre (before it closed) and I feel very privileged to have had such wonderful care and attention. I would love all women to have the choice to have their babies in such a nurturing and caring environment.
This discourse is so important and I’m glad we are thinking of ways to reverse the Medicalization of birth and to revert to natural, supportive birth environments
An extremely great initiative.

How could I not sign this petition, and give it my absolute full support, after having had a child at The home birthing center and 4 at home?! I completely believe in home births and midwifery, and I feel that for myself & many women, it really is the only way to go!!!!
