Come on Birmingham...what are we waiting for? Several cities in Alabama as such as Huntsville, Tuscaloosa and Mobile, as well as across the country have benefited tremendously by having an organization in place whose sole purpose is the explore and create opportunities for their cities to host national and international sporting and entertainment events, and I think it's time that Birmingham steps up to plate and form such an organization as well!

The Birmingham Sports and Entertainment Commission will promote the value of sports growth in Birmingham and Alabama by acting as an authority on the economic impact, visibility and quality of life issues associated with sports. Its mission will be to lead, organize and support sports development with the goal of building Birmingham’s reputation as a premier sports destination.

Such an organization can be structured to have (but not limited to:):

* Advisory Board/Board of Directors made of up local business owners, vendors who have a vested interest in attracting sport events to Birmingham

*Corporate Partners *Individual/Corporate Memberships

*Luncheon Series

 *Award Banquets

 *Concerts/Festivals/Sports Events

By signing this petition you are pledging your support of such an organization, should the city move forward with this proposal! Thanks in advance and I look forward to working with you in the not-so-distant future for the City of Birmingham!

Updates

July 28, 2010

The conversation around a dedicated commission for our city has grown more nuanced as I hear from local business owners who see the same potential I do. Bringing this vision to the attention of our municipal leadership requires patience while we continue to build a clear argument for the economic advantages of such an organization.

July 28, 2010

Reaching this current level of momentum highlights how many residents truly believe in the potential of our city to become a major destination for events. It is heartening to see such broad agreement that Birmingham deserves an dedicated commission to champion our growth and economic vitality.
