Zero Tolerance for Intolerance
As the news continues to circulate regarding the recent racial discrimination against a law student by university police officers, the members of the Black Student Alliance have shared the same sentiment as many others who seek to ensure that this university is a space where all individuals are respected, valued, and treated equally; that feeling is one of total disgust. Perhaps what is most disheartening about this current story is that it is not singular or even a rarity. There are countless other students and Charlottesville community members with untold stories who have had similar experiences with area law enforcement, and this is completely unacceptable. Our demands are quite simple; we insist the university administration to actively seek a sincere resolution to the current situation and in a transparent process, ensure that the police department recognizes and addresses the root issues of racism and intolerance. In the remaining weeks of academic year and throughout the summer, we will work tirelessly to make sure that this happens. For those who share our commitment to justice and equality, we encourage you to initiate discussions on the reality of race relations on grounds and join us in our efforts to demand open action by administration by writing letters of support on behalf of yourself and any organizations you represent. In Unity, The Black Student Alliance
