Article 154 of the Constitution provides for the nomination of the Secretary to the Cabinet by the President with approval of the National Assembly. While the Commission fully respects the independence of parliament and appreciates the fact that it has no role in vetting of nominees to public offices, the argument that seems to suggest Ambassador Juma was sacrificed at the altar of overbearing patriarchy laced with a huge dose of malice is to us extremely discomforting.

Kenya needs competent and qualified no nonsense civil servants to implement vision 2030. Monica Juma is one of them. I support her appointment.

We cannot afford to have proven competence, professionalism and integrity sacrificed at the altar of impunity and mediocrity. Ultimately, the sovereign power rests with the People of Kenya, and on this we must veto our elected representatives.

There is no way the MPs can reject the appointment of the Amb. as a Cabinet Secretary without tangible evidence. She needs to be given chance to hold the position because she is competent.
