I think this is a great petition. As a highschool student a few years ago, we had a teacher that really encouraged us to learn about living sustainably and even brought chickens in to live at the school for the semester. It was really cool to see how many of my fellow students jumped on board with the idea of sustainable living and learned alot about the chickens! I can say from personal experience that the hens are absolutely quieter than any sort of dog that barks, and they do not create a bad smell if their pen and coop are taken care of. The concern about predators such as racoons and coyotes is valid, but with our current method of garbage disposal (racoons always get into that), and the fact that we are rapidly expanding out into the surrounding countryside (especially in West Galt), we are going to see these animals anyway.
Neighbours actually enjoy having the birds around and it's a great way for their kids to come over and see the bird that makes the eggs, and then to be able to take an egg or two home with them!
I fully support this petition and would request that Cambridge review its bylaw on birds. I know that many cities have guidlines in place as far as a limit to the number of birds you may have, and to allow only hens, not roosters. These are fair restrictions, but I don't believe that it is fair to say that a resident is not allowed to have birds, especially if their property is well set up for it. There is so much to be learned and gained from producing your own food, and chickens are a vital part of that.

I live in the Galt area, grew up on what use to be the outskirts of town, but is now in the city. So chickens don't bother me. It's up to the individuals. just as long as they know how to properly care for the chickens.

I live in the Hespler area of Cambridge. I think it's silly we are not allowed to keep chicken with all of the benefits that come with having them.

Backyard chickens allow people to live more sustainably, and have a better idea of where their food comes from. Additionally, I have not heard any strong reasons why they should be banned.
The main argument that I've heard against chickens is the noise and smell. I've visited friends in Guelph who had chickens, and until I was actually in the coop, I couldn't even tell that they were there.

My house already has chicken coops attached to the back...we currently use for storage, but have commented many times how great it would be to be able to have chickens
