I strongly support property rights. I live in Hespeler. My family has been here since 1947. My grandfather used to raise pigeons on Thomas st. We had ducks and chickens growing up.

"Urban farming" as it is often called is a great step towards sustainability. No gas required to drive to the store and no exhaust pollution, It allows people to learn valuable skills for real, rather than online "farm games". This is a bylaw change that definitely has value.

I grew up raising chickens and learned a great deal about how to care for animals and never once had to question where my food came from. Later for university I moved to Guelph, a city that allows chickens and thought nothing of it; of course chickens could be integrated into city living, no problem! It was only when I moved to Cambridge three years ago that I realized not all cities see the benefits like I do! I believe that Cambridge can become more and more a city that embraces urban farming, as a way to fuse urban and rural together for the benefit of the whole community! Cities are more and more the places that people are moving to, and we can't all have an idyllic acreage in the country. I chose Cambridge to live and work because I believe in this city, in the potential of its citizens - especially the youth that I work with - and I see it as a forward-thinking place to be. We can indeed figure out ingenious ways to farm, garden, reduce waste, and create learning and teaching experiences for our future children. I'd love to see chickens in my backyard soon!

This is far overdue. As long those wanting chickens in their yard properly care and tend to them, and keep their coops clean and the food properly stored, there should be no issues.
