Trying to make lessons interesting and engage young people can be difficult - a freak accident shouldn't be grounds for dismissal.

Its an utter disgrace that an inspirational teacher such as Mr West could be sacked. He needs to be reinstated ASAP, our children need him!

I can confidently say Mr West is the only reason I have an A-Level in Physics. I've known teachers, including the current head, telling students they will amount to nothing. Surely this is more damaging then a ricocheted pellet! Please sign to show Mr West our support.

Amazing teacher, losing him will scar far more lives than if he actually shot a pupil square on, and he didnt!! Ashamed to be a former pupil of this school if this is how they react to getting pupils interested!

It would appear from the comments of the pupils that Mr. West is a brillant teacher who brings his subject to life in the classroom. I am amazed at the esteem this teacher is held in. It is most unfair he should lose his position due to a much regretted accident. Please reinstate this fine teacher.

What has happened to Westy is ridiculous. Bring the man back, he was one of the only teachers who actually deserved the respect they were given in that school.

I will sign ANY and EVERY petition that I find, calling for Richard West to be re-instated. Teachers strive hard to engage and inspire their pupils and, as I understand it, Mr West has the passion, the knowledge and the experience to engage and inspire many (including the pupil who was hit by the pellet). I feel strongly that the school has acted in haste in sacking Mr. West, most likely to appease ill-informed parents, and I hope that those responsible will have the wisdom and the maturity to reflect upon the repercussions of their decision and to reverse it. There are far worse things than the stray pellet that caused a slight injury in a freak occurrence. Depriving pupils of an exciting and vibrant education that will inspire and sustain them for life is one of them. Experiments can be modified, so can decisions.

If a student breaks a bone playing rugby - oh well, that's just the way it goes sometimes. But a minor incident in a science lesson with no permanent consequences - sack him! How silly. Give this man his job back!

Anyone who has the presence of mind to try and make education fun is worth their weight in gold. Teachers such as these are an inspiration to their students, and though occasional and saddening, accidents are to be EXPECTED to happen!

Without knowing the complete circumstances it's hard to hold a view either way but if the pupil that was hit with the pellet was unharmed and is supportive of the teacher coming back it makes sense to go that way. I suspect though it's probably an official a**e being covered because either the airgun was used in lessons without going through channels or it was approved and the management are looking for a scapegoat...

Man-up governors! Your primary responsibility should be to recruit and retain excellent teachers,and then support them when they take reasonable risks i the course of making learning fun and engaging. Shame on you. Show you are fit to govern by making a rational, independent decision to reinstate this inspirational teacher.
