Started by Take Back The RC 12 years, 5 months ago
We, all part of the RC community, be it students, faculty, or alumni, want to bring back the freedom of expression that, in the past, characterized the RC. We all feel that the current state of the building with the sterile walls and hotel-like atmosphere directly contrasts with what the RC stands for.

We would like to change the zero-tolerance policy that exists in regards to student-made murals in East Quad ("Artwork may only occur on freestanding canvas, not on any wall surface" is what the artwork policy says) and establish a system for review and approval of future murals. By no means do we believe that there should be an "anything goes" policy for these murals, we only believe that we should be able to express ourselves like we could in the old building.

Updates

March 20, 2014

The administration has taken notice of this momentum. I have requested a formal meeting with the facilities department to review the current zero-tolerance policy on wall murals.

As a former RC student, it would sadden me greatly to see the artistic freedom and vitality of the Residential College crumble under the weight of Housing's desire to "keep things nice". Expression itself is nice.

Alumni parents, let's get behind this! I was in the new EQ and it is AWFUL. Hideously bland.

I chose Michigan because of the RC and only because of the RC. East Quad was such an important place to me because of the culture of creativity and expression, and also because of the history left behind by former students. As an alumna I do not want to see this dorm and the RC homogenized into the greater University via limited expression. I think this is one (though not the only) meaningful way to ensure this community survives and impacts people's lives the way it did mine.

I cannot agree more with students who want to bring back some of the spark and spunk of the old EQ. The sterile building makes the RC less personal. Can't wait to see what happens!

As a former RCer, I was very disappointed at the sterile uniformity of the walls in the renovated EQ. I would love to see current students make the building unique again.

One of the most inspiring people I've ever met owes much of her insight to the RC. It's a shame to think that can be erased and discounted by some bureaucratic management.
