Really Longwood University? After so many positive experiences as a parent of a student at your campus this the first time I am left shaking my head. College should be a place where a student finds his or her voice and you are denying them a perfectly harmless canvas.

I am not signing this petition unless you have more of a statement that this violates our free speech and such (which I totally see where you are coming from with that). But we give daily tours to prospective students and parents, if we do not know who is writing chalk on the grounds people can write inappropriate things on the ground. Which will end up staying on the ground until it rains. Now maybe if you had to have a drawing approved by the student union first (like posters have to be approved before being put on the walls), then maybe I could get behind supporting this cause. But I don't want random things just being drawn on the ground. They're other ways to publicize events for clubs and protest peacefully (like just protesting).

It is important that atleast some part of longwood side walk (behind student union) is the best section for students to express their opinions, thoughts, creative ideas and beliefs/ values as a way to bring the longwood student body closer together as a whole and to give the campus more life as brought by the student body.

I do not see the problem with sidewalk chalk since it is already used on campus sidewalks. The benefit of using chalk is that water can be used to wash away chalk, especially in case it's inappropriate and negative. Once again, chalk should only be used on our sidewalks and NOT used to vandalize buildings.

As an art major, i would love to do some chalk drawings as some of my assignments, but i've lacked the location to do so.

Longwood is paying employees to scrub chalk off of the sidewalk when they could be doing something else. Sidewalk chalk signs have helped me know about important things happening soon that I never heard about anywhere else (ex: the college democrats debate) because university weekly emails are long and sometimes irrelevant.

Who ever is running this petition is hindering my freedom of speech rights. I posted a comment on here a few days ago that expressed my doubts and just all around being rational about the situation and it was removed. Funny how a person who is concerned about freedom of speech takes other peoples comments down because it isn't what they believe in.

This is absurd. Side walk chalk expresses emotion and is a form of art
